What is Orthotics, Prosthetics, & Pedorthics?

Orthotists are allied health professionals specifically trained, educated and credentialed to provide comprehensive medical bracing (orthotic) services.  They evaluate and assess the patient, design and develop appropriate custom fabricated and/or custom fitted external assistive, supportive and/or corrective anatomical devices (spinal, upper or lower limb braces), for the purpose of restoring specific neuromuscular and/or musculoskeletal functions of the human body.

Prosthetists are allied health professionals specifically trained, educated and credentialed to provide comprehensive “artificial limb” services, whether due to congenital or other loss of limb or extremity.  They evaluate and assess the patient, design and develop appropriate custom fabricated and/or custom fitted external assistive, supportive and/or corrective anatomical devices generally referred to as limb prosthetics for the purpose of restoring specific neuromuscular and/or musculoskeletal functions of the human body.

Pedorthists are allied health professionals who practice a specialized “ankle and below” subset of orthotic interventions, providing, fitting and customizing medically-indicated therapeutic footwear, including orthopedic shoes and diabetic therapeutic shoes and inserts.
